Psychotropic Drug Detox Help – Chicago, Illinois Warning

Abuse of psychotropic drugs on the elderly made news in the Chicago Tribune, October 27, 2009. Clearly, over medicating and unnecessary prescription pills lead to worse problems. All psychotropic drugs, including SSRIs, Benzodiazepines, tranquilizers, sleeping aids, have significant side effects which are undisclosed to patients.

Does your doctor tell you all the dangers, benefits and alternatives to taking psychotropics? This is called informed consent and is a right you have and must be given to you by any MD or psych.

Psychotropic Drugs – What About Informed Consent?

Psychiatrists, doctors, medical assistants, social workers and other health care workers recommending and ‘prescribing’ drugs for various ailments do not give informed consent to people taking these drugs.

Informed consent is the proper medical practice of telling a person all the benefits and dangers of any medical treatment, available alternatives as well as what may happen if no action is taken.

Taking drugs prescribed or not by anyone without informed consent puts you in physical or mental dangers.

Psychotropic Drug Side Effects

Medications can be extremely dangerous. For example, the most commonly used antipsychotics carry black-box warnings, the FDA’s highest caution advisory. Anti-psychotic drug side effects may include severe lethargy, permanent involuntary muscle movements, seizures, restlessness (continual pacing) and sudden death.

Have you been properly informed of possible alternatives? Are anti-psychotic drug side effects creating an unnatural need for more drugs like Benzodiazepines or sleeping aids?

Benzodiazepine side effects include serious dependency / addiction. Trying to withdrawal from benzos may be more than you bargained for. Common benzo side effects include detox / withdrawal effects similar to heroin withdrawal, but going on for months and years if incorrectly or incompletely nutritionally and therapeutically treated. Antipsychotics, sleep aids and antidepressants hold similar withdrawal side effects.

Psychotropic Drug Detox

Detox from psychotropic drugs is a holistic science and art requiring lots of know how, successful experience plus skilled medical supervision and guidance.

Psychotropic drug detox challenges include doctors and even detox specialists who are not fully trained in nutritional adjuncts which assist the body to properly and easily detox from years on psychotropic intoxication. Psychotropic drug detox is clearly the most challenging drugs for doctors and patients to withdrawal from.

Psych drugs are designed to shut down natural body detoxification processes. Antidepressants, benzodiazepines and psychotropic drugs alter normal brain chemistry, hormonal function and natural detoxification processes. What does that mean to you when you’re trying to detox from psychotropics?

Detox from psychotropic drugs require a specialized and detailed understanding of how body detox functions, nutrients, and medications interrelate. Doctors and detox specialists need to act more like scientists and nutritionists than simply an MD qualified to prescribe medications.

My 72 year old partner was recently diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety after completing a 6 month chemo protocol. He was also taking oxycontin 10mg and some percoset in the past month. Admitted to an in-patient psychiatric unit last week he was put on xanex, remeron and effexor. His symptoms seem to have worsened with these new medications. We live outside of Ann Arbor. Are you familiar with detox programs near us. We are on a limited income. Marijo

    • Drug Rehab Advisor:

      Marijo,
he is probably suffering from low and improperly functioning enzymes and glands due to the chemo. This is a common side effect of cancer treatment. He’ll need a minimum of one month away in an intensive holistic health centered detox program. Costs start at about $10,000 for the 1st month for intensive outpatient holistic detox.

I have been on psychotropics for 22 years thanks to my Mom and Dr. Inwood. I’m healing through a holistic therapy of ” life skills and education and spirituality and relationships and work.”My clubhouse, Fountain House Clubhouse, helped me get a very good gym membership at a NYC gym and working out with professional and amateur athletes and weekend warriors I learned a secret diet coupled to what I learned in the hospitals and lots of cocoanut water/water,no soda or fruit juice, lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, pasta, rice, potatos,fish/seafood, halal chicken, Italian/Indian spices, and pure pork and hardly any red meat with eggs, chocolate, tea, milk ,coffee, olive oil/canola oil, natural popcorn, and fasting to detox. And hardly
any junk food but delicious healthy food. And treating one’s self to fun food 1x a week. And my therapist Dr. Inwood said I can drink a little wine/beer with bread and butter and olive oil.

    • Garth,

I’m happy you’ve found a more holistic recovery for mental health symptoms than using dangerous psychotropic drugs, regardless of who prescribed them. We as people need to take ownership for our own health and lives. Holistic health and drug rehabilitation requires first steps.
The first step toward holistic well being is taking account for what we are doing to ourselves daily. Our health is in our hands. And if our hands are feeding our own mouths its time we take responsibility for what our hands are doing.
Good luck on your continued recovery and healing.
