Psychotropic Meds Detox

Detoxing from psychotropic medications can require more know how and skill than detoxing from street drugs like heroin or cocaine.

Psychotropic Meds: are medications specifically intended to alter, modify or influence thought, behavior, mood of the person taking them. Psychotropic meds are mind altering drugs that are often far more powerful and more dangerous than ‘street drugs’.

More people die, are hospitalized, overdose, suffer from serious side effects, are seriously damaged by psychotropic medications taken as prescribed by doctors than people who abuse illicit street drugs like cocaine, heroin, meth-amphetamines.

Detox From Psychotropic Meds

Detoxing from prescribed or illicitly abused psychotropic medications is therefore very desirable for people wishing a long healthy life. Several complications can arise while detoxing from psychotropic meds.

Major Psychotropic Med Detox Challenges:

  1. Your doctor doesn’t understand or believe you’ve become dependent / addicted to the powerful effects of these meds, and therefore is either incompetent in detoxing you smoothly from these psych meds or in conflict with your desire to be drug-free or off psychotropic medications
  2. Detox symptoms are creating significant problems in your life. The most common detox symptoms are erroneously called ‘rebound’ effects by pharmaceutical company reps. Psychotropic drug detox symptoms are an increase of bad feelings or conditions one had prior to getting onto the drugs, ie the drugs worsened your initial condition and the bad side effects are experienced while taking the drug or when the ‘therapeutic’ or potion like effects of the drug wear off
  3. Dangerous side effects of psychotropic drug detox are experienced. Now one becomes terrified or simply very cautious about withdrawing use of psych drugs

  1. Ernesto m:

I was on 4mg of resperidol and 150 mg of trileptal and the public defenders district attorney and judge accepted my guilty plea in exchange for my imediate release. the prosecutions overzealous prosecution and the inneffective assistance of counsel led to my committement to the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo. I was facing charges of 2nd degree assault the psycholigist James J Grant’s report stated that i was facing charges of 2nd degree murder !st degree assault and 2nd degree assault 90 days at Pueblo and 30 in jail and i was released on a misdeamenor. did the court ordered medication contribute to me accepting the plea deal. the psycholigist stated that i was basicially clueless to my actions. and given the heavy dosages because i did not realize what i had done. I have been of the medication since October 2010. and took Geodon in November 2010. Now i smoke a little medical marijuanna but the decision i made in court has been haunting me. I am paying restitution for the assailant that died as a result of his deadly attack. He twisted his foot in the attack he did not seek medical attention and developed thrombic occulision below the knee and occulisive thrombosis in the right lung. Yet the D.A. ststed that the blood clot originated in the ankle. so I was committed court ordered heavy medications and released to pay restitution but the side effect’s is what bothers me how long does it take for the psychotropic medications to wear off. Thanks for your time. Ernesto M, Colorado
