Steve, BC doctors, VCH and all detox centers in Metro Vancouver push methadone for everything from drug abuse to alcohol abuse. Methadone detox is the most needed service in BC, but probably has the fewest intelligent holistic and addiction doctors to deal with. A family member was prescribed methadone for an oxycontin addiction, and, as could be predicted, is now addicted to methadone. After several years of use he feels it is causing his health to deteriorate, but doesn’t know how to kick it without painful withdrawal. Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

One of my family members is addicted to drugs and alcohol. She wants to go to detox and treatment but she can not be admitted because of health concerns. She is prone to mini strokes?
What are our alternatives?

Oxycontin is considered by many doctors and health professionals as a very dangerous pharmaceutical drug because it is analogous to heroin: the body can’t tell the difference between the two.
There for a longer term detox and rehab program is usually the most economical in the long run. If time is the major factor, I do work with a very successful 15 day intensive outpatient program that give 6 weeks of follow up. Both directions will cost in excess of $10,000. Economically, therefore one has to decide to make the arrangements to get away for a couple of months to a rehab center. But we can find a local center which works very well also.
