I can’t sleep and sleeping pills don’t work – what can I do?
Sleep problems in the US and Canada are pushing people to take pills from their doctors at record levels. While sometimes drugs may be necessary, meds can get you into more trouble than you’re currently in.
What do you do when the pills stop working? What then?
Patients religiously taking sleeping pills or benzodiazepine drugs like Valium or Xanax to temporarily feel different may be in for a shock. None of these pills have been recommended for daily use for more than a few weeks. Yet doctors are giving or prescribing anti-anxiety drugs out at addictive levels to unsuspecting populations.
What’s the truth about sleeping pills?
Sleep Without Drugs
Establishing continued efficacy beyond a few weeks can be complicated by the difficulty in distinguishing between the return of the original insomnia complaint and withdrawal or rebound related insomnia. Sleep EEG studies on hypnotic benzodiazepines show that tolerance tends to occur completely after one to four weeks with sleep EEG returning to pretreatment levels. The paper concluded that due to concerns about long term use both toxicity and tolerance and dependence as well as controversy over long term efficacy that wise prescribers should restrict benzodiazepines to a few weeks and avoid continuing prescriptions for months or years. A review of the literature found that non-pharmacological treatment options were a more effective treatment option for insomnia due to their sustained improvements in sleep quality.

Many problem sources may be indicated as the problem that is causing the sleep problem. Well you should be able to do something about this. A problem without a solution is not really a problem. It’s either an indicator you need some competent help or its a justification.
Be careful of justification being disguised as problems. Justifications are exposed by the absence of a solution a person is willing to do or explore.
